Poetry should be read 3 times! For each read use this strategy...
I SEE...
Figurative Language
Highlight the examples of figurative language in the poem. **Refer back to the figurative language page for definitions of figurative language and examples, and your ILANs!
Rhyme Scheme
The repetition of sounds at the end of words.
Repetition
The repeated use of a sound, word, phrase, or line. This could be one way an author/poet produce an effect that adds to meaning.
I THINK...
1) Look at the title 2) Look for things "I SEE" that do/not go together. "I think the poet/author means by using ______________ (figurative language, rhyme scheme, repetition, etc)..." 3) Look at the POINT OF VIEW!
Poetic Structure
Poetry is writing that uses words, sounds, and structure in special ways to express meaning.
Line: A row of words Stanza: Group of lines
Point of View
Definition: the perspective of the poem.
I WONDER...
1) What the poet is trying to make me notice (repetition)? 2) What is important about the things I SEE or THINK?
Theme
The deeper meaning of a poem; the underlying message or the "big idea".
